Getting ready for the season. This is the time of the year when we dream up the future, equal part exciting and scary #gardendesign #shadestructure #rooftopgarden
Yes, spring is almost here, the crocuses don’t lie
Love the winter flowers! Witch hazel in full bloom #parkslope #nativeplants
Big news! We are moving to Prospect Lefferts Gardens to this cute dame. She is perfect for us, original floors, original fireplace, original stained windows, and only needs a little bit of love to be perfect. Now I get to design my own garden, fancy that #gardendesign #brooklynbackyard #1910
The story of a backyard in 7 images, from a playground that would bake in the summer to a hidden stylish playground behind a jungle curtain #gardendesign #brooklynbackyard #climbingwall #trampoline
Loving the play of shadows in the snow, even more because I’m pretty sure it will be all gone in days #isitspringyet
A trip back in time to show the process of building a successful garden. The first question is always: where does the water go? Brooklyn used to be full of marshes and rivers, and though we lost much of the agrarian wisdom of the land over the last century and a half, water always wins. Here we created 3 levels so we could entice rainwater away from the house, and towards the planted borders.
Other questions are:
- what do I need to fix? Post-construction soil, over enthusiastic weed trees?
- who lives here? How would they like to use the space?
- what kind of plants will be happy here? How can I capture the sunlight?
- can I replicate the style and flow from the indoors, so the transition from inside to outside feels seamless?
- how much maintenance will be needed? How will the materials used for the hardscaping evolve over the next 15-20 years?
What is a successful garden? For me, the one that finds the sweet spot of coexistence between humanity and nature #gardendesign #wildscaping #designforinsects #designforbirds #designforhumans
As much a sign of Spring as the emerging bulbs, and a reminder to prune my roses #davidaustinroses #wintergardening
